An Overview of Kratom
The Kratom Tree grows wildly throughout southern and central Asia and is botanically known as Mitragyna speciosa Korth. The Kratom tree can grow extremely large reaching heights of up to 15 metres and covers a ground space of well over 5 Metres. Its foliage is a deep dark green with red, white or green central veins. Generally, red vein strains tend to have more sedative and relaxing characteristics whilst green varieties have a more euphoric and energetic profile. White vein varieties tend to be the most stimulating. The tree is deciduous, allowing us to harvest and provide fresh stock all year round. A similar but different genus -Hallea - also grows wildly in parts of Africa but is not to be confused with genus known as Kratom
The plant contains over 25 active alkaloids. Most abundantly, these alkaloids are 3 Indoles (mitragynine, paynanthine, and speciogynine) and 2 oxindoles ( mitraphylline and speciofoline). The single most abundant – but not most active - alkaloid is Mitragynine. The most active alkaloid found in Kratom is 7-hydroxymitragynine which has potency 30 times greater than Mitragynine but only accounts for around 2% of the total alkaloid content
Traditional use of Kratom dates back so far that it cannot be precisely stated. It is known by several names depending on language and location, including Krahtom, Ketum, Kakuam and Ithang. Kratom use has been known in the west since the early 19th century when it was reported that Malaysians used the plant as an opioid substitute. Kratom is one of the most unique botanicals known to man because it is both a stimulant (at lower doses) and sedative (at higher doses) and so can be used for several different applications. In traditional medicine, Kratom has also been used to treat conditions as diverse as diarrhea and sexual dysfunction.
Throughout southern and central Asia, Kratom was traditionally used by chewing fresh leaves. However, other methods of use included; eating ground dried or fresh leaves or brewing tea. In some parts of Malaysia, a simple resin extraction was created by boiling down strong tea to improve the amount of time it could be stored. Furthermore, it was common to see road side stalls selling “Ketum” or “Kratom Water” in many parts of Malaysia
Conventionally, the plant was used by the poor, manual workers and farmers who used it to counteract the damage caused to their bodies by this type of work. It is for this reason that Kratom use is associated with worthy, hardworking men in many parts of Thailand
